NT Mardi Gras Float – World Pride 2023

After a 3 year beauty sleep (thank-you Covid), the fabulous Northern Territory Mardi Gras Float is BACK, bigger and brighter then ever before! Returning to Sydney’s infamous Oxford Street, be a part of history as Sydney World Pride takes over Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 2023!

The theme for World Pride 2023 is GATHER, DREAM, AMPLIFY.

This is the perfect time for the NT to shine, as the iridescent Northern Star of Australia.
Participants will become stars of the Northern Sky, lighting up Sydney with our Northern Glow. The float will be led by ‘The Northern Star’, a huge inflatable star to guide our way. Just as explorers used the Northern Star to navigate home, our star will send a message of acceptance and community back to the NT.

The Northern Territory has one of Australia’s largest rural rainbow communities. Our 2023 Mardi Gras will be a celebration of our regional & remote LGBTIQ community ensuring that our voices are heard and all our colours are seen. From the sea to the desert, our Northern Territory Rainbow Community celebrates all our differences and embraces an individuality, whether living in a capital city or to the very far regions of our regional and remote territory.

When you come from the NT you know how to make your own fun! We know the NT has a reputation for being a little bit redneck, but we want to show the world what an incredible, diverse and fabulous community we have in the North!” – Marzi Panne, Party Passport
The NT float represents LGBTQIA+ people from the Northern Territory and their supporters. This is the seventh year that the NT has marched with Pride and this year we march showcasing the fabulous faces of the North! The NT float has always been about visibility for LGBTQIA+ people in rural and remote Australia, as our community outside of cities face different challenges than those in densely populated areas. A mixture of fabulous NT representatives march, from the Darwinas to the Alice Springers, we are very proud to be joined by some of the Sista Girls of the Tiwi Islands.

COSTUME INSPIRATION
f
Each participant will receive an inflatable star backpack. These are battery-powered and lightweight. They contain LED lights that will shine a bright, glimmering light as participants re-create the famous NT sky.
We encourage individuals to express themselves! Inspiration comes from the night sky of the NT – think radiant blues, striking silvers and the famous dusty pink glow of a dusk sky. The unpolluted view of the Milky Way sees the spectrum of blues rich amethyst and shimmering black. Be inspired by the magic night sky over Uluru, the world famous Darwin sunset or the vast expanse over the desert sky.
